Games Industry – Level Editor

A level editor designs and creates any interactive architecture within the game, these include landscapes, buildings and objects / props.

Liaising with the Game Designer, they must ensure they stay in line with the initial concept, although they are often given the freedom to add variations on the design within the level they are responsible for.

The level editor map out the general layout of the level, including lighting, textures, forms and characters (whether they are PC’s or NPC’s and any special behaviors which may be assigned to them).

Importantly, they can also be responsible in designing the game play for their level, including:

  • Obstacles
  • Places to hide
  • Tests of skill
  • Elements of exploration and interaction

All of which determine the challenges the player will encounter and the actions they must take to overcome them.
